Definition – Marriage is loving sacrifice. Marriage is mutual care & fidelity of 2 people for one another. Marriage is the tool God uses to help us to grow up & be less selfish & more other-centered.
“Weddings are a time of great joy; it’s the living together afterward that causes all the trouble!” We laugh at this statement – but we also shiver because it rings so true. We’re scared of marriage. We’re afraid of failure, of being married to the wrong person. And so we search for the right partner with great care, with fear & trembling. But I wonder if sometimes we search TOO hard, looking for TOO much.
I believe that in the midst of so much literature & preaching on marriage, we have become dazed & confused about it. Marriage is quite simple, you know. We complicate it by expecting it to be the “cure all” for us & our problems; expecting it to the “be all & end all” of life. We expect our marriage to provide for our personal fulfillment in life.
